Chris Urbanik, PhD, LP
About Dr. Urbanik
I am a licensed clinical psychologist in Michigan, providing structured virtual therapy for adults statewide.
My work has been shaped by experience across several demanding systems, including federal healthcare, hospital psychiatry, community mental health, and organizational leadership. Earlier in my career, I spent a decade working as a police officer in a large metropolitan department.
These experiences have given me a close view of how sustained pressure, responsibility, and complex environments affect people over time. They also inform a practical and grounded approach to therapy.
Professional Background
I earned my PhD in Clinical Psychology from Wayne State University and completed clinical training in the Veterans Health Administration and hospital-based programs, including inpatient psychiatry and a Level I trauma center. I later helped develop and deliver clinical services within a residential program serving veterans.
Following this work, I practiced in community mental health and held executive leadership roles focused on community outreach and population health initiatives, including launching a mobile healthcare unit designed to expand access to care.
Across these roles, I have worked closely with physicians, administrators, frontline clinicians, and individuals carrying significant personal and professional responsibility.
Approach to Therapy
I was trained as an integrative psychologist and continue to draw from multiple evidence-based approaches depending on what will be most helpful for each person.
Therapy often begins with understanding the broader context of a person’s life and the patterns that may be sustaining distress. Early work typically focuses on strengthening foundational skills such as emotional regulation, stress management, sleep, and behavioral structure. As stability improves, therapy can shift toward addressing deeper patterns in thinking, relationships, and self-perception that continue to influence well-being.
My style is collaborative and direct. I aim to create a space where people feel understood and supported while also being willing to challenge patterns that may be holding them back.
Who I Often Work With
Many of the adults I work with are professionals, caregivers, or individuals in high-responsibility roles who are used to being relied upon by others. They are often functioning outwardly but carrying sustained stress, anxiety, burnout, or relationship strain that has become difficult to navigate alone.
My goal is to help people regain clarity, emotional steadiness, and practical direction while developing skills that support lasting change.
